NY’s “brownfields”
toxic chemicals still poison soil and groundwater decades after closure
New York’s “brownfields” are the scars of its industrial past. Abandoned factories, gas stations, tanneries, and mills where toxic chemicals still poison soil and groundwater decades after closure. The state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) was meant to transform these sites into safe, usable land. But a recent audit by the New York State Comptroller found that many projects, especially in the Capital Region, have been languishing for years, leaving residents to live beside invisible dangers that government oversight has failed to resolve.
