Five Big Fights Waiting for Albany in 2026

With the 2025 session behind them, lawmakers are already bracing for what could be one of the most consequential years in recent memory. When the New York State Senate and Assembly return to Albany in January, five major issues are expected to dominate the conversation from clean water to affordable housing to criminal justice reform.

The first battle will likely be over PFAS, the so-called “forever chemicals” that have been found in drinking water, soil, and even blood samples across the state. Environmental groups want broader bans on PFAS in cookware, cleaning products, and packaging, arguing that the state’s current rules are too narrow. Manufacturers counter that the compounds are essential for modern materials and that bans would raise costs for consumers.
