Utterly Voice:
When You Cannot Use the Keyboard and Mouse
Many medical conditions can make using a computer keyboard and mouse difficult or impossible. Fortunately, there are plenty of assistive technologies that can help you use your computer, even as a technology professional. You can utilize voice dictation systems, head tracking, eye tracking, facial expression recognition, mouth operated devices, and foot pedals for controlling the keyboard and mouse.
Utterly Voice is one such system. It is a voice dictation system designed for users that need more than just basic typing and clicking provided by operating system dictation features. For example, it’s very difficult to use built-in systems to type jargon or phrases not easily recognized, type individual letters, type keyboard shortcuts, browse the web, or write code. Using Utterly Voice, you can efficiently accomplish all of these tasks.
Utterly Voice is designed to be customized. Out of the box, the application provides basic typing and command abilities that can help you accomplish many complex tasks at the computer. If you spend many hours each day at the computer, you should customize the application to efficiently handle your daily tasks.
When you speak in your microphone, some of what you say is simply typed, but you can also say voice commands. Without commands, Utterly Voice would simply type everything you say. If you want to use your computer hands-free, you need to use your voice to accomplish much more than just typing. For example, you may need to scroll your mouse, delete the previous word, move the text cursor up, click a button, copy and paste text, etc. These types of actions are accomplished with commands. Utterly Voice default settings provide many commands, but you can customize them and add many more to improve efficiency.
Utterly Voice groups commands in modes. At any given time, one or more modes are active. While you are speaking, you can say any of the commands found within the currently active modes. Some modes are used for specific applications. For example, the “chrome” mode is used for Google Chrome. But, a mode can be used to group commands in any way you want. Once you become proficient with Utterly Voice, you should create your own modes for applications you use often and any scenarios where commands would be helpful.
For assistive technologies, controlling the mouse is perhaps the most challenging. Utterly Voice has done extensive research on finding the best methods for controlling the mouse by voice. There are pros and cons to each approach, depending on the clicking task, so Utterly Voice provides each of the best methods to you. The two most popular commands are “show” and “show links”. If you say “show”, the application highlights every graphical object found on the screen that could possibly be clicked with a numeric label. You just say the chosen number, and the mouse will be clicked there. If you say “show links” while browsing the web, a browser extension is used to highlight every clickable web page element with a numeric label.
In some cases, you need to perform very repetitive typing and clicking tasks. Doing this entirely by voice may be exhausting. Utterly Voice provides macros for these scenarios. You can use this feature to record and replay your phrases.
In order to type individual letters and numbers, Utterly Voice provides the “upper”, “lower”, and “number” commands. Using these commands, you can easily type alphanumeric text like “ABC”, “abc”, “aBc”, “123”, and “1.23”.
Utterly Voice is easy to use, but it is also a powerful application. This article introduces some of the basic concepts, but there are many other things you can do. See the documentation for more details. You can also see the application demos, which show several basic use cases.
